Eating out in Alcudia

From fast-food to haute cuisine, Alcúdia, Puerto Alcúdia, Playa de Muro (and not forgetting Alcanada) have got, if not all, then a pretty high percentage of food styles. The serious foodie can dine splendidly without having to fork out a fortune. While international cuisine is here in abundance, do take the opportunity to go native, and eat Mallorquin and local produce.

Breakfast, in truth, doesn’t amount to much in the way of purely local specialities. The omnipresent croissant and the “continental” breakfast vie with the British fry-up. But if pastries are your thing, then go for the ensaimada, a flat spiral-shaped bun with a sugar topping. Not great for the waistline, but fresh it can be quite tasty. The locals are very keen; you’ll see many carrying boxes of ensaimadas at Palma Airport en route to other islands or to the mainland. It is claimed that the sea air here helps in the raising of the dough. There again, maybe it doesn’t.

Lunch and dinner are when local cooking comes into its own. There is a strong reliance on vegetables and pork, both of which feature in the soups (sopas), cabbage being a staple part. There is pork wrapped in cabbage, rostit (roast pork), suckling pig, sobrasada (pork sausage with paprika), frito mallorquin (fried pork liver with potatoes, also available with lamb) to mention but five pig applications. Just a word about stuffings (for the roast) as there can be quite a variety of ingredients - liver, egg, bread, spices, apples and prunes, for example.

Dispensing with the meat, tumbet is a strictly vegetarian dish, comprising peppers, aubergines, tomato and potato. More of a snack but significant in the Mallorcan food world is pa'amb oli. At its most basic, this sounds like pretty dull fare: unsalted bread with olive oil (yumm!?), but it’s much more when presented with garlic, tomato, cheese, and indeed other toppings at those establishments which make it a speciality. Cocas are also more of a snack, these being a local take on the pizza, with vegetable toppings on a thin dough base.

Mallorcan cooking makes use of produce that grows in abundance on the island, hence, for example, turkey breast with almond sauce. Rice is a popular ingredient, typified by arros brut (basically rice with meat), and while paella can be had with rice, the local twist is to use noodles in fideua.

As you might expect, fish and seafood are widely available. One dish to look out for (or avoid if you don’t care for the slippery thing) is espinagada (a spicy pie with vegetables and eel). Much rated is caldereta de langosta, a lobster dish, though not strictly native to the island.

In common with most of Spain, tapas are popular, and are a good way of trying different, often local dishes. Note, by the way, that you can frequently order half or full tapas portions, so do check as half is often sufficient.

As to desserts, go for turron, an almond nougat, puding (yes really, pudding) - a kind of cream caramel, or the local cheesecake, greixonera de brossat.

And to wash all this lot down? The Majorcan wine trade centres on Binissalem, some 20 kms south. Labels to look out for include José L. Ferrer, Miquel Oliver and Vins Nadal. Among the most common grapes for red wine are Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon (for red), Manto Negro (for both red and rose), and Prensal (a local grape), Muscatel and Chardonnay for white.
