Fiestas in Alcudia
In keeping with the rest of
Mallorca, Alcúdia is strong on its folk &
religious traditions, and there are several fiestas and
events
throughout the year that maintain these traditions, some
of which,
e.g. Three Kings and Carnival, are observed elsewhere
in Catholic
countries but which have their own local flavour. |

"Giants at the Fiesta of Sant Jaume" |
January 5 - Three Kings (Night-time) Puerto Alcúdia
and Alcúdia town.
The kings (or wise men if you prefer) arrive by boat at the
port and conduct the adoration of the baby Jesus at the Church
of Mare de Déu del Carme i Sant Pere in Puerto Alcúdia.
A cavalcade then heads into the centre of the town of Alcúdia
and there is an enactment of the nativity at the Porta del
Moll.
January 6
Concert by the Banda Municipal de Música
and the Coral Ciutat d’Alcúdia (town choir).
January 16 - Sant Antoni Abat (Eve) - Alcúdia
The celebration of the saint of domestic animals. Its roots
lie in ancient fertility rituals and the temptations faced
by the saint. A cracking celebration with bonfires blazing
around the town, devils who scare off children, the cooking
of local sausages over the bonfires and music.
January 17
Sant Jaume Church - Alcúdia The blessing of the animals.
February - Carnival
Carnival kicks off in the last days before Lent with the Thursday
being the start of celebrations that revolve around parades
and fancy dress. This fancy dress can often be quite satirical,
important people being characterised in the costumes of the
revellers. A fair amount of eating also goes on - yet more
local sausages. The Sunday sees awards being made for best
costumes.
Easter
Easter is a major event. It is a celebration of the Holy Week,
commencing with the Procession of Silence on Palm Sunday through
the streets of Puerto Alcúdia. On Maundy Thursday and
Good Friday there are further processions with the four brotherhoods
represented in Alcúdia being carried on floats. On
Easter Sunday there is the procession of L’Encontre
(aka Es Tres Botets - the three little jumps) which celebrates
the meeting between Mary and the resurrected Christ. And then
on the Tuesday there is a further celebration, this one at
the Ermita de la Victòria, when there is a worship
of the Virgin Mary and more eating.
April 23 - Sant Jordi - Alcúdia Book fair-come-fiesta.
Books are sold on the streets, men give women a rose and get
a book in return.
June 29 - Sant Pere - Puerto Alcúdia.
In fact this is a week of celebrations with concerts, games
and sports. On the 29th is the actual procession for the saint
of sailors. From the Church of Mare de Déu del Carme
i Sant Pere there is a parade with the statue of Sant Pere.
The statue is then placed on a boat which sails around the
bay of Alcúdia followed by a flotilla of decorated
boats. The celebrations come to an end with a massive firework
display.
